SMILES AND HUGS MARK THE START OF NEW YEAR

The 2023-24 school year kicked off on Tuesday, August 15 with students from across Westminster Public Schools showing up for their first day with new clothes, a touch of nerves and excitement about what the next nine months hold in store for them.

The same held true for several teachers and staff.

Superintendent Pam Swanson spent the morning at Sherrelwood Elementary to help the school celebrate last year's recognition as a Governor’s Bright Spot Award winner.

The Bright Spot Award acknowledges schools that excelled in spite of the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The school, led by Principal Cindy Davis, is one of only 21 schools to receive the recognition. In addition to the honor, Sherrelwood was given $50,000 for programs like increased mental and behavioral health or tutoring services, preparation and prevention strategies for future health emergencies, faculty development opportunities, or school improvements.

What’s Up WPS cameras were out across the district to capture the first day.
